Container and Specialist Haulage Across the South West.

D. Perfect and Sons provides container and specialist haulage across the South West, serving Bristol, Gloucestershire, Wiltshire, Somerset, Dorset, Devon and Cornwall. We collect and deliver through Royal Portbury Dock and Avonmouth, and we also support cargo routed through Southampton, London Gateway, Felixstowe or Liverpool.

Port choice in the South West depends on the ocean service and cargo type. Bristol is valuable for west-coast container, vehicle, breakbulk and project flows; Southampton is a major deep-sea option for transatlantic and worldwide services; and other UK gateways may be nominated by the carrier. The inland plan needs to account for distance, cut-offs, driver hours, access and the empty-container instruction.

Port-to-South West Road Transport

The M4 and M5 provide the main approach to Bristol and Gloucestershire, while the A303, A30, A38 and A35 become important for Somerset, Dorset, Devon and Cornwall. Longer rural routes and constrained delivery sites require accurate access information, especially for high-cube, flat-rack, heavy or abnormal loads.

We serve manufacturers, food and drink businesses, agricultural suppliers, energy and engineering projects, construction sites and regional distribution operations. Equipment can be planned for a sealed box, container ground placement, plant, machinery or a regulated consignment.

Container Ports and the International Routes Behind Local Movements

This page gives Bristol the regional lead while explaining the alternative deep-sea gateways used when a carrier routes South West cargo elsewhere.

The port lists below describe current trade-lane examples, not a permanent or exhaustive timetable. Shipping lines can alter rotations, omit calls or use transhipment hubs, so each booking must be checked against the live schedule.

Bristol Port Container and Project Cargo Haulage

For South West movements, Bristol Port gives South West importers and exporters a west-coast gateway for containers, vehicles, breakbulk and project cargo. Royal Portbury and Avonmouth should be treated as distinct dock locations when planning access.

Relevant facilities: Royal Portbury Dock and Avonmouth Docks.

International routes and example ports (check the live carrier schedule):

  • Bristol Port states that its carrier partnership connects customers with a global network covering Asia and North America.
  • The port has also promoted direct Mediterranean connectivity through the carrier network.
  • Because individual services may be direct, transhipped or cargo-specific, the live carrier booking should determine the route wording used at publication.

Southampton Container Haulage

For South West movements, Southampton is the principal deep-sea container terminal on the South Coast. It is important for transatlantic cargo as well as services to Asia, the Middle East and the Indian subcontinent.

Relevant facilities: DP World Southampton container terminal.

International routes and example ports (check the live carrier schedule):

  • North American rotations include Saint John, New York, Norfolk, Charleston and Savannah.
  • Other current transatlantic coverage includes Veracruz and Altamira in Mexico and Miami in the United States.
  • DP World also identifies direct service coverage to Asia, the Middle East, India and Pakistan, plus feeder links to Ireland, Scotland and mainland Europe.

DP World London Gateway Container Haulage

For South West movements, London Gateway is close to D. Perfect and Sons’ West Thurrock operating centre and gives access to deep-sea, reefer and international container traffic through the Thames.

Relevant facilities: DP World London Gateway deep-sea container terminal.

International routes and example ports (check the live carrier schedule):

  • Current Asia–Europe carrier networks connect through ports including Shanghai, Yantian, Qingdao, Ningbo, Tanjung Pelepas and Singapore.
  • Americas services include trade lanes involving Caucedo, Cartagena, Manzanillo, Buenaventura, Callao and San Antonio.
  • Other networks connect the terminal with Southern Africa, India, the Middle East and Oceania, subject to the carrier’s live rotation.

Felixstowe Container Haulage

For South West movements, Felixstowe is a principal east-coast deep-sea gateway. Collections and returns must be booked to the correct terminal, with the shipping-line release, container status and cut-off confirmed before dispatch.

Relevant facilities: Trinity Terminal and Landguard Container Terminal.

International routes and example ports (check the live carrier schedule):

  • Asia–North Europe networks include services involving Shanghai, Ningbo, Yantian, Qingdao and Xiamen in China.
  • South-East Asian hubs on relevant networks include Singapore and Tanjung Pelepas, with services also linking ports such as Laem Chabang.
  • Port rotations vary by carrier and sailing; the live vessel schedule should always be checked before presenting any route as direct.

Liverpool Container Haulage

For South West movements, Liverpool is the natural west-coast gateway for the North West and a useful alternative for cargo destined for the Midlands, Wales and western Britain.

Relevant facilities: Liverpool2 and Royal Seaforth Container Terminal, with CLdN facilities at Brocklebank Dock for relevant RoRo traffic.

International routes and example ports (check the live carrier schedule):

  • A weekly North American Express service links Liverpool with Montreal and the wider Canadian and North American Midwest market.
  • Peel Ports lists direct and short-sea connections involving Spain, Italy, Portugal, Cyprus and Turkey.
  • Feeder networks connect Liverpool with India, Africa, South America and the Far East, while transatlantic services support North American trade.

Standard Containers, Specialist Trailers and Regulated Cargo

The service is not limited to standard dock-to-door boxes. Our container transport service can be planned for 20ft, 40ft, high-cube, reefer and other ISO equipment, subject to weight, release, trailer and site requirements. Where a customer site has no loading bay or lifting equipment, side-loader container delivery may allow a suitable container to be placed on the ground. Surface strength, side clearance, overhead obstructions and container weight must be checked first.

Flat-racks, machinery, plant and other heavy or out-of-gauge cargo may require a low-loader or an STGO CAT 1 and out-of-gauge movement. STGO means the Special Types General Order. Route assessment, axle loading, dimensions, bridge restrictions, notifications, escorts and site access are considered for each abnormal indivisible load. These movements can be planned to or from ports and locations anywhere in the UK.

D. Perfect and Sons also provides ADR hazardous and Section 5 transport for suitable consignments. This includes controlled work involving dangerous goods and, where the classification and authority requirements are met, Class 1 explosives, arms-related cargo and other Section 5 movements. Nationwide movements are subject to acceptance of the exact UN classification, quantity, packaging, documentation, security plan, vehicle specification and route.

This capability is relevant to aerospace, food and drink, agriculture, engineering, energy, construction, automotive, marine supply and regional distribution across South West, while remaining available for movements to and from anywhere in the UK.

Why Choose D. Perfect and Sons?

D. Perfect and Sons has been family-run since 1987. The company uses its own vehicles, trailers and drivers and does not subcontract its haulage work. That gives customers a direct line to the people controlling the movement and keeps responsibility for planning, equipment and communication in one operation.

The modern Volvo fleet is supported by more than 40 trailers and in-house workshop, inspection and brake-testing facilities at the secure West Thurrock depot. Long-serving drivers, CCTV-controlled premises and experience with ports, ADR, Section 5, side-loaders and abnormal loads support the practical, accountable service described throughout the existing website.

Which ports do you serve for South West haulage?

The page covers Royal Portbury Dock and Avonmouth Docks, DP World Southampton container terminal, DP World London Gateway deep-sea container terminal, Trinity Terminal and Landguard Container Terminal, Liverpool2 and Royal Seaforth Container Terminal, with CLdN facilities at Brocklebank Dock for relevant RoRo traffic. The correct terminal is taken from the shipping-line release or export booking; routes and acceptance remain subject to the live schedule and job details.

Do you cover all of South West?

Yes. The named towns are examples rather than a boundary. Send the full collection and delivery postcodes so the traffic team can check access, distance, route and equipment.

Can you carry out-of-gauge or STGO cargo from a port?

Yes, where the load, trailer and operating conditions fit D. Perfect and Sons’ capability. Dimensions, weight, drawings, lifting method, notifications, route and delivery access must be assessed before acceptance.

Can you move hazardous cargo or explosives nationwide?

D. Perfect and Sons handles suitable ADR cargo and is Section 5 authorised for controlled work. Every job is reviewed against the exact classification, quantity, packaging, documentation, security and vehicle requirements before confirmation.

Can a container be placed on the ground?

A side-loader can ground a suitable container where there is a firm, level surface with enough side and overhead clearance. The container weight and site layout must be checked before the movement is booked.
